Caring for your piano is not hard. The most important things to remember are to:

  • give your piano a safe place to live
  • keep the temperature and humidity as consistent as possible
  • tune your piano regularly
  • keep away pets, liquids  and anything that may scratch the surface
  • prevent dust from building up
  • close the cover whenever your piano is not in use

Here are a few answers to some common questions we’ve heard.

How often should my piano be tuned?

In general, we recommend that your new piano or newly restored be serviced four times the first year and twice a year by a qualified piano technician. Regular servicing will increase the enjoyment and longevity of your instrument.

Where should I put my new piano?

Your piano will perform best under consistent temperature and humidity conditions away from outer doors and windows. Avoid areas near a fireplace, heat/air vents and direct sunlight. We recommend and offer installation of the Piano Life Saver system from Dampp-Chaser. This system helps to maintain proper humidity, which is key to the longevity of your piano.

How do I care for my piano’s wood finish?

Generally, a new piano finish requires only occasional cleaning with either a dry or damp soft cloth. Avoid setting drinks, other wet objects or sharp objects on the piano, as you would any other fine piece of furniture.

How do I clean the keys of a piano?

A soft cloth damped with a very dilute solution of water and mild detergent can be used to gently rub the keys in a back to front motion, then dry with another soft cloth. Be sure that your cloth is not so wet as to allow the liquid to drip down the sides of the keys.

A piano that is well-maintained can give you many years of musical pleasure.
